I hadn't thought of Billy Idol, the British rock star musician, in years until I saw a one hour presentation on his life and artistic career one night last week on the Biography TV Channel. I found the program interesting even though much of the material was fairly typical of a rock star's life. Most musicians have careers divided between periods of success and exuberance and periods of failure and depression that sometimes last for years. Drugs often flavor the rock star experience. Billy Idol was no exception.
Billy Idol was born William Albert Michael Broad on November 30, 1955 in Middlesex, England and experienced a rather unremarkable lower middle class childhood. As a teenager he developed an interest in punk rock style music that was so popular at that time among the young, especially in England.
He studied English literature for one-year only at Sussex University then dropped out of college to become a member of the Bromley Contingent, an English punk rock band that modelled itself after the Sex Pistols.
