As Channel 4's weekly satirical current affairs show 10 O'clock Live nears the end of its 15-episode series, commissioners will be in divided discussion on whether to give it a second lease on life.

With one eye on the ratings, it will be difficult to ignore the drop in the programme's interest since the opening episode, which claimed 1.4 million viewers. Around midway through the series, that figure had plummeted to 631,900 – less than half that of the first episode.

Mixed Messages

The programme-audience relationship has often been as shaky as the camerawork and fluffed autocue lines of the opening episode. In that very show, David Mitchell, interviewing Universities and Science Minister David Willets, derided members of the audience twice for treating it like a "panto" as they jeered and booed the Member of Parliament.
